The 2017-2018 School Year

We have limited openings in our 4 Day Sunbeam class that meets in the afternoon. All other classrooms are full. Please call  or email if you would like to be added to our wait list. Please provide your contact information, child’s name and date of birth.

The 2018-2019 School Year

If you are interested in receiving an email to remind you of our Open House, Tours and Registration dates for the 18-19 school year, please send an email with your name and child’s date of birth.

Welcome! 

Thank you for your interest in A Child Becomes Preschool. We have been serving the West Seattle community since 1989 offering part time preschool for students ages 2 ½ – 5 years old. Our academic year runs from September through June each year and closely follows the public school calendar, honoring national holidays and school breaks.

We register and enroll students beginning in December for the school year that begins the following September. Once classrooms are full, we begin wait lists. We do leverage this wait list each year– particularly through the spring and summer months — leading up to the start of the new school year. Occasionally, we have availability during the course of the school year. This information would be posted on our website.

The Application Process 

We understand that choosing a preschool for your child is a big decision. We encourage you to visit our school, meet our staff and explore the classroom!

SCHEDULE A TOUR

We begin scheduling in December for tours in 2017. Tour days are Tuesdays and Wednesdays while school is in session. We would love to provide you a look into our three classrooms and answer your questions. Tours are for parents and guardians only. We ask that you do not bring your children or any siblings. We would love to meet your child and show her or him our school during our Open House. Call or email the office to schedule a time.

OPEN HOUSE

We will host an Open House on Monday, November 6, 2017 in the evening and Sunday, January 21, 2018 in the afternoon at the preschool. Drop by with your child or by yourself, to meet our Director, teachers and tour the school and classrooms. No need to RSVP, hope to see you there!

PRESCHOOL FAIR

We will post information about the West Seattle Preschool Fair when we have a date and time.

STEPS TO SUBMIT AN APPLICATION

We begin accepting applications in mid -December for the school year that starts the following September and continue to accept submissions until the school year begins. Each application requires a $75 non-refundable fee and must be submitted through the Parent Portal.

Required steps:

  • Each family must set up a secure account on our website – one account per family. This requires your name and an email address. A temporary password will be emailed to you. We encourage you to change this upon logging in for the first time.
  • Once logged in, you must set up a Payment Profile with a credit or debit card. This card will be used for all school related charges including the fee for each submitted application. Setting up your payment card does NOT charge your card.
  • Once you have completed your Payment Profile, you will be able to fill out and submit an application. Upon submitting your application, the payment card on file will be charged $75.

We do our best to accommodate your classroom selection. If your first choice is not available, we place your child in the alternate available classroom unless you have indicated otherwise. Your child must be age eligible to enroll in each classroom. Your submission does not guarantee enrollment.

TIMELINE
Friday, January 13, 2017 Early Registration – Applications due from currently enrolled and alumni families.
Friday, February 3, 2017 Close of First Round Open Enrollment – Applications due from new families for consideration in the first round of enrollment.
Friday, February 17, 2017 Enrollment Notifications – Notifications for enrollment (placement and wait list) are mailed out to all applicants.

Applications received after Friday, February 3, 2017 will be considered on a first come, first served basis for any remaining openings in our classrooms. Notification will be mailed within two weeks.

WAIT LIST

As classes fill, a wait list for each class will be generated for pending applications. Please keep in mind that class lists can change dramatically between February and the start of school in September.  Please do not be discouraged if you are placed on a wait list.  You will be notified if and when a slot opens.

Class Assignment Process 

Children are enrolled into classes based on the Age Guidelines and/or class selection.  In the case that there are more applicants then class slots, assignments for our initial enrollment will be made in the following priority:

  1. Currently enrolled student
  2. Sibling of currently enrolled student
  3. Sibling of previously enrolled student
  4. New student

Butterfly and Sunbeam class applicants who do not receive their preferred class will be placed in any remaining open class and also placed on a waiting list for their preferred class.

AGE GUIDELINES

Each classroom, Caterpillars (ages 2 1/2 – 3), Butterflies (ages 3 – 4) and Sunbeams (ages 4 – 5+) will follow the age requirements outlined below.  Children are developing and learning so quickly in these preschool years!  Grouping children of like ages allows our teachers to develop and focus the curriculum in way that best compliments the child’s stage of development and prepare them for the next year of learning. Our primary goal is to place students in the classroom that best suits their developmental needs which include social, emotional and cognitive.

Caterpillar Classroom AM only Must be 2 ½ years by Sept 1 of the incoming school year. No exceptions.
Butterfly Classroom AM only Must be 3 years by Sept 1 of the incoming school year.
Sunbeam Classroom AM/PM Must be 4 years by Sept 1 of the incoming school year.
